Toner vs Drum Unit: Most Brother laser printers use toner cartridges that work with a drum unit. The toner cartridge is the container that holds the actual toner powder while the drum unit is what transfers that powder onto paper to create the actual printouts. Both pieces need to be replaced. Since drum units have higher page yields, they last longer unlike toner cartridges which might need to be replaced in a month or so depending on your printer usage. You would typically need to replace your drum unit after using 3-4 toner cartridges. Check your printer's manual to be sure. Learn more about toner cartridges and drum units here.

What's the difference between a toner cartridge and a drum unit? The toner cartridge contains the powder that is used to create text and images. The toner cartridge is placed inside the drum unit. The drum then works in conjunction with your toner by transferring the actual powder onto the page when you print. For this reason, drum cartridges do not need to be replaced as frequently as toners, usually only after you go through 3 or 4 toners. If your printer’s display reads “Replace Parts Drum”, your drum unit is nearing the end of its life.
