What ink does the HP 5255 use?

The HP OfficeJet 5255 All-in-One printer uses one black and one tricolor HP 63 ink cartridge. HP 63 cartridges come in two yields: standard (63) and high yield (63XL). High yield HP 63XL cartridges contain more ink and print more pages. You can get high yield HP 63XL for the black and tricolor. Lower cost aftermarket ink cartridges also work with the HP OfficeJet 5255.

If you continue printing with one empty cartridge, it can cause your printhead to overheat and cause some parts to melt and seriously damage your printer.

How do I change the ink cartridge on my HP OfficeJet 5255?

1. Make sure the printer is turned on.
2. Lift the scanner unit via the cutouts on the left and right side of the printer. This will expose the cartridges inside. Wait until the printhead stops moving before touching the cartridges.
3. You will see that there is a lid on each of the cartridges, a purple lid on the tricolor cartridge and a black lid on the black cartridge. Lift the lid of the cartridge you want to replace and push it back gently until the cartridge is unlatched.
4. You can then gently pull out the cartridge from the slot. Set it aside for recycling.
5. Remove packaging from the new cartridge. Pull off the plastic tape using the pull tab. Make sure you don't touch the nozzles or the contact. If you accidentally touch the contacts, wipe it off with a damp, lint-free cloth.
6. Slide the new cartridge into the empty slot.
7. Close the lid so the new cartridge is secured in place.
8. Close the scanner / top of the printer.
9. Wait for your printer to recognize the new printer.
10. You can start printing!

You can use the same instructions when installing high yield HP 63XL cartridges and LD aftermarket HP 63 and 63XL cartridges.
